Just a reminder...
Submissions for Waipa District Council (WDC) Beekeeping Rule change Close on January 29th. It would be extremely helpful for ALL beekeepers in Cambridge and Te Awamutu make a submission. Anyone in the country can make a submissions, so if you want to support Urban Waipa beekeepers in changing the Rules please do so.

Currently, ALL beehives in both Cambridge and Te Awamutu are illegal based on the WDC's existing District Plan (only 1 apiary is legal with a consent), and a review is underway to get rid of, or change the Rules to something that is fit for purpose, and doesn't cost beekeepers significant money and time to apply for a consent.

Please follow this link below, read through the page, the submission forms are at the very bottom of the page.
You don't have to complete their one, but you do need to include all the info if you type up your own document.

For the full details of the options, and reasoning, please read the Section 32 document linked at the bottom of the page.

There are 4 options on the table...
1 & 2 are not viable at all.
3 - Delete the District Plan Rules and crate a Bylaw
4 - Change the Rules in the DP to be more realistic.

My personal recommendation is Option 3, to create a Bylaw, which is what most Councils have, as part of Animal Nuisance rules. WDC is currently at 67th position out of 67 Councils for its current, very over the top Rules. Option 4 keeps the rules in the District Plan, because they seem to have this obsession with needing significant prosecution powers for failure to comply. No other Council in NZ has ever come close to prosecuting any beekeeper for their bees causing a nuisance to neighbours. My personal goal is to try and convince them that that requirement is completely unnecessary.
Any nuisance complaint can easily be managed within a bylaw. We need to get that message across to WDC.

If anyone needs assistance, please post. I have driven this change with WDC for the last 18 months, and know everything there is to know.

Waipa Council have just advised they have so far received 5 (five) submissions. Five... In 2014 they received 11,

Come on everyone, be the change. It is really frustrating doing so much hard work to stop Te Awamutu's beehives from being illegal, to have so little interest.
If Waipa DC decide not to change the rules, they will have a mandate to enforce all 400 odd beehives to be removed, or pay up for a resource consent.

Please don't sit back and think this doesn't affect you... We should all be helping our fellow beekeepers in TA and Cambridge with this one. And if you live in that District... this affects you.
Details are in the post at the top. It doesn't take long to write your views, and send it in.
Submissions close at 5pm tomorrow, 29th.
